FishingWith Bahia Blanca, fishing comes in three flavors: catch-and-release fly fishing on the flats (by boat or wading) and reef fishing and trolling by boat.
Catch-and-release fly fishing is generally done in the shallow, open waters of Chetumal Bay and inside the National Marine Park and Reef of Xcalak. The beauty and tranquility of this landscape invites you to enjoy the delightful sport of fly fishing, with macabí, tarpon, bonefish, and permit available. You can find good fishing simply by wading at “Los Dedos”, “Nato’s Flat”, “Punta Maya” and “Lighthouse” and in many, many other places fly fishing by boat is superb.
There are few activities that present nature's beauty better or are more rewarding than fly fishing on the remote and spectacular Xcalak flats. Solitude, beauty, tranquility, limitless sky, fish-savy guides, birds and wildlife, and the challenge of successful stalking jacks, bonefish, permit and tarpon greet those who fish in the Bahia Blanca catch-and-release program. The Xcalak catch-and-release program has been extremely well received and the Coop boasts many, many happy fly fishermen and fisherwomen, a good number of whom return regularly.
Please take a look at a slide show (with music) of our catch-and-release customers. [NOTE: your browser may ask for permission to run active content. You need to allow this and to have Java enabled; to hear the show, your speakers or earphones must be on and the volume properly adjusted.]
Reef-fishing expeditions last one-half day and trolling expeditions last one-half or a full day and on both expeditions, you can keep the fish you catch if you chose. The boat captain will recommend sites based upon weather and seasonal conditions and provides snack, water and sodas. You bring your gear (see list below); the guide provides live bait if needed.
